What is PAN and How to get a PAN card?

PAN is a short name of Permanent Account Number. PAN number is a ten digit alphanumeric number assigned by Income Tax Department. UTI Investor Services Ltd. (UTIISL) has been authorized as IT PAN service centres and National Securities Depositories Limited (NSDL) has been authorized to dispense PAN services through TIN Facilitation centres.

Income Tax authority has made it mandatory to quote PAN number on return on Income. PAN number is also used in correspondence with Income Tax Department. It is also mandatory to provide PAN number for certain financial transactions such as investment in Mutual Funds, Opening a D'Mat account, making term investment or depositing cash exceeding Rs. 50,000/-, sale and purchase of motor vehicles or immovable property etc.

To obtain a PAN card one has to fill up form 49 which can be taken from TIN facilitation centre or can be downloaded from Income Tax department website. One latest colour photograph, Address proof (Ration card, Voter id, Bank pass book, Employer's certificate, Electricity/ telephone bill etc) and Identity proof (bank pass book, Voter id, Ration card, etc.), fee of Rs. 67 is to be deposted at the time of submitting the form 49. Submit the form 49 with above documents and designated centre will issue an acknowledgment slip. PAN card is delivered by NSDL at the residence or office address as mentioned in the form.
