15th August: India celebrating Independence Day

Today is Independence Day! India will be celebrating it's 61st Independence day. Independence day is a celebration commemorating the anniversary of the nation's assumption of independent statehood after ceasing to a colony or part of other state. India got Independence from United Kingdom on 15th August 1947 and became a sovereign nation. Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was sworn in as first Prime Minister of India by Lord Mountbatten on 15th August 1947. His first famous speech was titled "Tryst with Destiny"...
"At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance..... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."
Today South Korea will also celebrate its Independence Day (became Independent from Japan in 1945). This day is a National Holiday for Indian's.

The main celebration of Independence day takes place at Red Fort, New Delhi, where Prime Minister of India hoists national Flag and delivers a nationally televised speech from it's ramparts. I wish all the people of India (as well as South Korea) a very Happy Independence Day!
